6/7/14 Free Improvisation (from the show)

After performing this free improvisation (or as I jokingly and fancifully call it, “Fantasy on Spontaneously Generated Themes”) I pose the question—just was does it mean to perform a “free” improvisation, and how exactly is it free? Well, to hear the answer that question, along with a lot of great music and other stories, you’ll need to come to the show. THAT, unfortunately, is not free, but it’s not exactly expensive. $15, $8 for students/seniors. Thursday through Sunday at the Athenaeum Theatre, Chicago.

8-31-12: Old Blues #1 (Video)

This comes from a live streaming video session, shot at Taylor Studios in Milwaukee. “Old Blues #1” is (obviously) the first of this set of blues I’m writing in the “old” style, as a counterpoint to the New Blues set I’m also writing. The key feature of this particular piece is the way the left hand plays the tune and accompaniment (really three parts: base, chords, melody) while the right hand improvises freely over the top.
