12-1-11: 4ths, Tritones, and Randy Weston

In the universe of jazz pianists (a universe I only peripherally inhabit because in general it bores the shit out of me) players my age generally talk about Herbie, Chick, Keith—sometimes McCoy, though he was never considered quite as “hip” as those others. Almost nobody talks about Randy Weston, who along with McCoy Tyner, is the best of all of them. Nobody talks about Mr. Weston because he was never really hip—just brilliant. I owe so much to him, as this piece reminds me.
