2-16-09: Monday Morning Free Improv

What exactly makes this any freer than anything else here, since they are all free improvisations? Well, you may notice that it is rather free of rhythmic constraints—it seems to float in a kind of arpeggiated impressionistic ether. And yet: it actually ends up being quite structured as it moves towards a seemingly logical cadential conclusion. Of course, you don’t know that there is some kind of unfolding structure moving towards a logical cadential conclusion until it has actually happened—you just just hear this repeated three note pattern over a heavily pedaled wash of sound. You don’t know until the end that there is some point. And when I say “you”, I’m actually referring to myself: it’s not like I started out having a clue where this was going. And that may be another one of the unique charms of this kind of free improvisation, particularly when it’s live, which this obviously isn’t: we’re both finding out what going to happen at approximately the same moment. (Technically, I have to hear it before I play it, so maybe I’m a few microseconds ahead, but you get the idea.)
